Words Of We: Your One And Only Version

There’s this saying that you are who you’ve always been and we must find our way back to ourselves when we lose our way. But how can we?
We are who we are at this exact moment. To return back to the self of the past is to return to the conditions that were once favourable to you.
When you were more free you felt more joy; when you’ve been more outgoing you’ve had more friends or acquaintances to talk to; when you were more focused and dedicated it showed up in your work and it reaped you many rewards. These are all the things that can be present to you if you let the effort work.
Yet at this time you don’t find yourself as outgoing and you keep wondering why you don’t feel like yourself. “I used to be so fun and outgoing” - you may say. You absolutely were but you don’t see it happening anymore. Does that mean that your true self is lost? No.
At this point in time you have other priorities. Your energy might not be what it used to be. Or perhaps you’ve found that times of solitude are more favourable to you than being out and about with no focus on other things that matter to you as equally.
There’s a new version of you that is forming. A much more focused, matured, seeking meaning. You don’t have to return to your old self just because it’s the only version you know so well. It served its time and now you must form a new self, appropriate for the present moment.
New likes and dislikes. New paths or life goals. If you leave the past self behind you open a completely new door of possibilities.
You don’t have to keep in mind what you’ve used to like. Ask yourself what do you like now? What is the present moment asking of me? Let it form and embrace it. A new version is something that you will look back to when you’re ready to form a new identity that will match another moment that will be the complete opposite of this one. Or perhaps you’ll return to the self that you’ve started with.
The most beautiful thing about our lives is that we have the ability to move mentally with so much flexibility. One thought and your new life forms. That one thought carries you forward, same as changing the perspective that opens up so many new roads for you. It’s just a matter of practising it.
What’s more important is that the versions of self are in no way bound by time. You may change your sense of self every 5 years or every 5 days. It’s all reasonable.
Discovery is what leads this process. The more you find out about yourself the easier it is to plant new seeds for that new version to grow.
Yes, you’re made of that same soil but the final look of the flower is ever changing. The flowers surrounding you will change too.
It’s important to understand that with every new version you’ll have to let new people in. And with every change the old people in your life will grow too. Some won’t, but that is totally okay. They’re growing too but on their own time.
They may not be ready yet to bloom with you so you must not wait. You waiting for the other weeds to catch up will make you lose your own petals.
The flowers don’t stay blooming forever. You need to enjoy your season and take it all in. It’s that fresh breath of air when you feel your best self and fully in your whole essence.
Later the flower you’ve chosen to be will take rest and another one will bloom. This time more subtle, different color. The others still won’t bloom yet even though you’ve been waiting to enjoy this time with them. That is still okay. You’ll find a flock of flowers that blooms with you.
It’s all written down so metaphorically but the main idea is that you do not have to choose who you want to be and stick with it for the rest of your life.
Choose who you want to be ‘now’ and embody it fully. You don’t want to be jumping from one thing to another hoping to save the ‘self’ that you’ve known for the last 5 years. It will just make it harder for you to enjoy life as is.
That self that you’ve known for all this time wouldn’t really fit in now.
They were cool then but it’s not cool now. Not when you’re trying to do more serious things in life, or trying to make better decisions to set yourself for happiness.
Honor all versions of yourself but always remember that there’s time served for everyone, including your past self.
Print the picture and give it a name so you can refer it to it as ‘This Era’.
